{"id":1394,"date":"2012-07-16T17:32:25","date_gmt":"2012-07-16T17:32:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cookhappylivehealthy.org\/blog\/?p=1394"},"modified":"2012-07-16T17:32:25","modified_gmt":"2012-07-16T17:32:25","slug":"the-beauty-of-relishes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cookhappylivehealthy.org\/blog\/the-beauty-of-relishes\/","title":{"rendered":"The Beauty of Relishes"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Want a Good Way to Save Time, Money and Stress?\u00a0 Relishes Make for Easy Meals and Great Taste<\/h3>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been wanting to experiment with relishes ever since reading <em>A Thousand Acres<\/em>, a novel profiling the lives of\u00a0 several Iowa farm familyies.\u00a0 While the novel itself was pretty unsettling (although masterfully so), the summer harvest always brings to mind its description of Iowa food preservation rituals.\u00a0 It puts my paltry canning efforts completely to shame.\u00a0 The novel&#8217;s women didn&#8217;t settle for putting up a few jars of plain old tomatoes and peaches.\u00a0 They preserved almost everything from their gardens&#8211;much of it in the form of interesting sauces and relishes.<\/p>\n<p>I remember thinking that seemed like a ridiculous lot of work!\u00a0 But as the months and years passed, I realized those Iowa gals may well have something on us.\u00a0 Sure they worked hard for a couple of months each summer, but think of the benefits their investments yielded:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mealtime Speed\u00a0<\/strong> Need dinner in a hurry?\u00a0 Fry up pork chops and top with a flavorful relish.\u00a0 With the relish providing the pizzazz, side dishes can be super simple.\u00a0 Get a totally satisfying meal together in practically no time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stress-Relief\u00a0<\/strong> No need to worry all day about what to make for dinner.\u00a0 Just pull a relish from the shelf, mix &#8216;n match with different meats, sandwiches, wraps, salads, etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Affordability\u00a0<\/strong> We all know that seasonal produce is the best in terms of taste&#8211;but its also very reasonably priced.\u00a0 So preserve those savings for year-round enjoyment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It took a couple years, but this summer I dug up some of the relish recipes I&#8217;ve been saving and took the plunge, making a gingery beet relish.\u00a0 I feel like I struck gold!\u00a0 Beets are so plentiful and cheap right now.\u00a0 Make up a batch and it stores for a couple months.\u00a0 Pull it out and use with abandon on meats, sandwiches, salads, rice dishes&#8211;you name it.\u00a0 Get not only color and flavor but a valuable nutritional boost.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m excited to share the many joys of relish with you&#8211;and to relish some as well.\u00a0 Join us for one of our Farmers&#8217; Market classes this week to, cook, learn, taste and chat relishes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Could relish-making be the key for busy people who want nutritious meals without spending a lot of time in the kitchen?
