{"id":1479,"date":"2012-10-10T15:49:40","date_gmt":"2012-10-10T15:49:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cookhappylivehealthy.org\/blog\/?p=1479"},"modified":"2012-10-10T15:49:40","modified_gmt":"2012-10-10T15:49:40","slug":"cooking-as-a-thinking-activity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cookhappylivehealthy.org\/blog\/cooking-as-a-thinking-activity\/","title":{"rendered":"Cooking as a Thinking Activity"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure style=\"width: 401px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  \" title=\"Sauteing Plums\" src=\"http:\/\/i722.photobucket.com\/albums\/ww230\/mcolletterogers\/FoodDay%202011\/Plums-Sauteed-Adjusted.jpg\" alt=\"Sauteing Plums\" width=\"411\" height=\"324\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sauteing Black Friar plums.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I once had a job opening envelopes.\u00a0 All day long.\u00a0 I quit after four days.\u00a0 It was either that or take up a drug habit to survive the mindlessness.<\/p>\n<p>I thought about that experience today, as I was saut\u00e9ing plums to freeze for winter.\u00a0 I did this last year and the plums were divine.\u00a0 But this year, the skins became quite bitter.\u00a0 I immediately began thinking about what went wrong&#8211;too ripe? maybe I used a different kind of plum? maybe the dry year was responsible? would baking be better than saut\u00e9ing?<\/p>\n<p>Some people think that feeding our bodies should demand nothing more than following Steps 1-3 on the back of a box, or popping something in the microwave for 5 minutes, maybe turning once.\u00a0 The holy grail is to invent meal products so easy they require no thought to use.\u00a0 And we&#8217;ve all accepted this as the highest and best objective, i.e., that the best meals are those that require the least from us.<\/p>\n<p>But exactly how much fun is that?\u00a0 Not much from the looks of our mealtime landscape.\u00a0 Lots of meal making misery; precious little enthusiasm.\u00a0 A lot like my boring envelope job.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve found that food and meal making are more fun the more they engage my brain, the more I can learn and grow in my knowledge, the more opportunities I&#8217;m presented for mini bursts of mastery.\u00a0 How nice to reflect back, on at least one part of life, and see improvement month over month and year over year.<\/p>\n<p>So here&#8217;s to cooking as a thinking activity!<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 419px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  \" title=\"Sauteed Plums on a Plate\" src=\"http:\/\/i722.photobucket.com\/albums\/ww230\/mcolletterogers\/FoodDay%202011\/Plums-SauteedonPlate.jpg\" alt=\"Sauteed Plums on a Plate\" width=\"429\" height=\"359\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">I was anxious to savor a plum after they cooled a bit. How disappointing to taste the bitterness in the skins&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 417px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Sateed Plums in a Jar\" src=\"http:\/\/i722.photobucket.com\/albums\/ww230\/mcolletterogers\/FoodDay%202011\/Plums-Sauteed-InJar.jpg\" alt=\"Sateed Plums in a Jar\" width=\"427\" height=\"421\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8230; but engaging my thinking brain, I slipped the skins off&#8211;which is easy once the plums were sauteed. Although they left a hint of bitterness behind, the flesh was still quite delicious. I packed in jars for the freezer, although maybe we&#8217;ll just eat this batch over the next few days.
