{"id":1743,"date":"2013-09-05T17:10:22","date_gmt":"2013-09-05T17:10:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cookhappylivehealthy.org\/blog\/?p=1743"},"modified":"2013-09-05T17:10:22","modified_gmt":"2013-09-05T17:10:22","slug":"good-meat-hard-choices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cookhappylivehealthy.org\/blog\/good-meat-hard-choices\/","title":{"rendered":"Good Meat, Hard Choices"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"color:#993300;\">In the News:\u00a0 Is your meat fabricated from drugs or grown from food?<\/span><\/h3>\n<figure style=\"width: 340px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" alt=\"Cattle at feedlot\" src=\"http:\/\/i722.photobucket.com\/albums\/ww230\/mcolletterogers\/5f692502-9852-461e-8c80-176a2d5eecbc.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"204\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Copyright NDSU Ag Comm on Flickr Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Walmart just started airing an ad as part of its &#8220;Steak-Over&#8221; series.\u00a0 Filmed at CU&#8217;s Folsom Football Field, the ad shows Buffalo fans first lauding some steaks hot off the tailgate grill and then being surprised to learn that they came from Walmart.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s tempting.\u00a0 Good tasting meat, low everyday prices.\u00a0 But remember these great words of wisdom:\u00a0 &#8220;There is no such thing as a free lunch.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To wit, just a few days before the Walmart story, the <em>Wall Street<\/em> ran an ominous article titled, &#8220;What&#8217;s Ailing America&#8217;s Cattle?&#8221;\u00a0 Seems &#8220;a growing number of cattle arriving for slaughter at U.S. meatpacking plants have recently shown unusual signs of distress.\u00a0 Some walked stiffly, while others had trouble moving.\u00a0 A few even sat down in strange position, looking more like dogs than cows.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One doctor of animal science reported seeing cattle walking down a truck ramp tippy-toed when usually they just run down the ramp and jump out.<\/p>\n<p>Weight gain supplements are the suspected culprits.\u00a0 As year after year of severe drought drove corn prices to record highs, &#8220;the margins got extremely squeezed in our business,&#8221; explained Gerald Timmerman, a third-generation cattle rancher and feeder.\u00a0 To continue earning profits despite higher input costs, cattle feeders turned to beta-agonists as a cheap way to put pounds on cows.\u00a0 These drugs, originally designed to alleviate asthma symptoms in humans, were morphed into weight-gain supplements over the last decade.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s easy to see why.\u00a0 They can add 24 to 33 pounds to an animal&#8217;s final weight by stimulating the growth of lean muscle instead of fat.<\/p>\n<p>As Mr. Timmerman describes it, &#8220;You can drive through a feed yard and spot every one [of the cattle] that&#8217;s on it.\u00a0 They look like muscle-bound athletes. . . .\u00a0 From a personal standpoint, I felt it was not the right thing to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know where Walmart sources its meat.\u00a0 Perhaps from happy, pasture-raised cows.\u00a0 But economics is a pretty rigid discipline.\u00a0 If input costs go up, something has to give.\u00a0 If the end price to consumers remains a great value, you must question what happened in between, in the production phase.<\/p>\n<p>As smart consumers, why not start asking questions and demanding more&#8211;and be ready to make some hard choices for better meat.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the News:\u00a0 Is your meat fabricated from drugs or grown from food?
