{"id":490,"date":"2009-07-06T19:14:29","date_gmt":"2009-07-06T19:14:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cookhappylivehealthy.org\/blog\/?p=490"},"modified":"2009-07-06T19:14:29","modified_gmt":"2009-07-06T19:14:29","slug":"green-kitchen-tip-citrus-bags-become-herb-washers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cookhappylivehealthy.org\/blog\/green-kitchen-tip-citrus-bags-become-herb-washers\/","title":{"rendered":"Green Kitchen Tip: Use Citrus Bags for Herb Washing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Keep those yellow, green and red mesh bags that lemons and limes come in.\u00a0 They are perfect for washing herbs and, more importantly, spinning them dry.\u00a0 Surely you&#8217;ve attempted to chop washed herbs that haven&#8217;t been spun dry.\u00a0 The waterlogged mass turns into a mess of green slush.<\/p>\n<p>Of course if you are on top of things, you wash the herbs the night or morning before they&#8217;re needed, in which case they&#8217;re nicely dried.\u00a0 Chopping them is easy and the end result is a fluffy halo of green garnish on a finished dish.<\/p>\n<p>But in case there&#8217;s a day when you&#8217;re not exactly on top of things, here&#8217;s a pretty good option: Use a saved citrus bag as a makeshift spinner.\u00a0 Cut off any tags, then close one end with a bag closer or simple knot.\u00a0 Pop the herbs inside, then:<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Washing Herbs\" src=\"http:\/\/i722.photobucket.com\/albums\/ww230\/mcolletterogers\/HerbBagWasher2-1.jpg\" alt=\"kk\" width=\"250\" height=\"188\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Step 1:  Wash herbs under spraying water, separating and shaking to loosen dirt.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 242px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i722.photobucket.com\/albums\/ww230\/mcolletterogers\/HerbBagWasher4-2.jpg\" alt=\"dd\" width=\"252\" height=\"334\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Step 2.  Head outside and, holding the open end tightly, fling the bag up an down several times.  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 246px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Perfectly washed and dried herbs\" src=\"http:\/\/i722.photobucket.com\/albums\/ww230\/mcolletterogers\/HerbBagWasher6-1.jpg\" alt=\"kk\" width=\"256\" height=\"340\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">In the End:  Herbs that are washed but dry and perfect for chopping.  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I got this idea from the Veggie Scrub, reviewed in <a href=\"..\/2009\/07\/06\/scrubbing-vegetables-veggie-scrub-makes-it-easier\/\" target=\"_blank\">yesterday&#8217;s post<\/a>.\u00a0 This handy invention does a great job scrubbing vegetables and can also be used as an herb washer\/spinner&#8211;for small amounts.\u00a0 however, when I&#8217;m washing large bunches (e.g., for pestos, pistous and salsas), a large citrus bag does a more effective job of both washing and drying.<\/p>\n<p>While you likely need only a couple citrus bags for herb washing, you needn&#8217;t pitch all the others that find their way into you kitchen.\u00a0 They are perfect for bagging onions, garlic, potatoes and fruit at the grocery store, sparing the earth a couple more plastic bags.\u00a0 (FYI:\u00a0 Each year, 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide.\u00a0 Each American uses between 300 and 700 plastic bags each year.\u00a0 This tip can reduce that annual figure to\u00a0 just 299, or 298 or 297 . . . .)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Try to chop a waterlogged bunch of herbs and it turns into a mess of green slush.
