{"id":719,"date":"2010-03-12T22:36:56","date_gmt":"2010-03-12T22:36:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cookhappylivehealthy.org\/blog\/?p=719"},"modified":"2010-03-12T22:36:56","modified_gmt":"2010-03-12T22:36:56","slug":"whats-going-on-in-the-winter-garden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cookhappylivehealthy.org\/blog\/whats-going-on-in-the-winter-garden\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s Going on in the Winter Garden?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Just a Dead Zone. . . or Place of Active Resting?<\/h3>\n<p>We just published the Winter issue of <a href=\"http:\/\/vegetableamonthclub.com\/leekmagcover.html\" target=\"_blank\">Vegetable a Month<\/a>, online magazine.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the cover:<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 390px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/vegetableamonthclub.com\/leekmagcover.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Vegetable A Month, Winter Leeks Issue\" src=\"http:\/\/i722.photobucket.com\/albums\/ww230\/mcolletterogers\/Artwork%20for%20Work\/Blog%20Pics\/Leeks-Mag-cover-450x560px-1-1.png\" alt=\"Vegetable A Month, Winter Leeks Issue\" width=\"400\" height=\"457\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Winter Leeks Issue:  Take a look around<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We loved this picture for the Winter issue.\u00a0 It was the brainchild of our Creative Director, Claudia Chang.\u00a0 Of course she also took the prototype &#8220;Beautiful Leek Picture,&#8221; shown below.\u00a0 But she was particularly fond of this picture because it did what good art is supposed to do:\u00a0 help us think about the world in a different way.\u00a0 In this case, leeks &#8220;growing&#8221; in the snow sparks a little wonderment:\u00a0 What&#8217;s going on in the winter garden?<\/p>\n<p>From the outside, certainly, things do look a bit dead.\u00a0 And that&#8217;s usually how we talk about gardens in winter.\u00a0 &#8220;Everything&#8217;s dead,&#8221; we say, as in &#8220;there&#8217;s nothing going on.&#8221;\u00a0 In Nature&#8217;s terms, however, winter isn&#8217;t just a gap of nothingness, but a critical link between Autumn&#8217;s abundance and Spring&#8217;s vibrancy.\u00a0 It is period of profound rest.<\/p>\n<p>This thought was with me yesterday on a short winter hike.\u00a0 Once the noise of the city was behind me, Winter&#8217;s quiet could be heard.\u00a0 There I was on one of the most popular summer trails, with not a soul to be seen, just the rocks and trees stoically marking the time, dutifully standing guard over the deliberate rest taking place all around them.<\/p>\n<p>Settling.\u00a0 Deliberate resting. Recharging.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a lot going on in a winter garden.\u00a0 How about in your body&#8217;s &#8220;garden.&#8221;\u00a0 This is a good time for rest and recharge there, too.<\/p>\n<p>But spring is fast on the way, so don&#8217;t delay.\u00a0 Stock up on winter rest before the heady days of spring arrive.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 297px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/vegetableamonthclub.com\/leekmagcover.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Beutiful Leeks Picture\" src=\"http:\/\/i722.photobucket.com\/albums\/ww230\/mcolletterogers\/Leeks-cover-380x350.png\" alt=\"Beutiful Leeks Picture\" width=\"307\" height=\"282\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Claudia&#39;s Beautiful Leek Picture<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Claudia Responds:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes. . . gardens in winter are magical.\u00a0 I&#8217;m reminded of &#8220;puja,&#8221; a tradition from Hindu and Buddhist thought, which has to do with honoring and devoting attention, often accompanied by offerings of good food and flowers.\u00a0 Winter is a time for honoring the garden.\u00a0 Give it time to rest.\u00a0 Respect the work it is doing beneath the frozen surface.\u00a0 Harbor no regrets for the last season or anxiety for the next.\u00a0 Give to the garden because it gives so much back the rest of the year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What&#8217;s going on under all the leaves, debris and snow?
