Cook without really cooking? Does that sound crazy? It all depends on how you define “cooking.”
Very often, “cooking” brings to mind the gourmet, recipe-driven version that involves lots of cutting and chopping, worrisome spicing and seasoning, specialized techniques, confusing instructions, new and unique ingredients and trying to get everything on the table at the same time. This form of cooking is usually associated with a fair amount of angst and stress–and all the Problem(s) with Cooking listed in the previous post.
But there is another version of cooking that’s called everyday cooking. You know those people who are able to get healthy meals on the table on a consistent basis (and reap the amazing health benefits of a steady, wholesome diet?) This is the kind of cooking they do.
Want to know the secret to their success? They don’t really cook! At least not recipe-driven, gourmet, hobby-style cooking (except occasionally.)
What good everyday cooks do that struggling cooks don’t is a combination of shrewd assembling and piecing together, thinking ahead, strategically utilizing leftovers, and employing system cooking. And by combining these strategies, they get into a flow that is easeful, natural and just no big deal. And they regularly get meals on the table that deliver joyful good health and energy.
Really, these folks are not so much “cooks” as “meal makers,” which is why my classes are not so much “healthy cooking” classes but “healthy meal making” classes.
